As a native of Korogocho, and a first-generation student, words can’t describe my feelings right now! Despite the challenges presented by the COVID19 pandemic, it’s time for graduation!
It was a very surreal moment being hooded yesterday! Three very amazing years studying for my Ph.D. degree at Ohio University, USA, finally feels complete. It’s not the Ph.D. title that makes this graduation unique, but the struggle, patience, persistence, resilience, support, and outstanding mentorship I received during this journey
. I am indebted to my mum; though widowed, jobless, and illiterate, she did all she could to provide my siblings and me with the gift of education. She has been unwell for some time, but today she is in her living room following the live streaming of the fruits of her prayers, hard work, and personal sacrifices. She is, what Prof Arvind Singhal would call, a real Positive Deviant.
My journey to Ohio University started in 2009, when Dr. Cat Cutcher picked me up from the airport and introduced me to guys in Athens-Ohio, and again when Prof Steve Howard gave me a ride from the airport as I joined Ohio University for the second time. The curtain finally fell yesterday. I have so much ![]()

to all the teachers who taught me over the years from Kindergarten up to this level!!!!!!!! At least my middle school teacher at Korogocho Primary School. I know that teaching people like me in Korogocho during those days wasn’t a walk in the park due to insecurity and gun violence that marked our childhood. Madam Ringos and her colleagues diligently walked to Korogocho every day to teach us. They never gave up on us! Madam Ringos, Mr. Chira, Mrs. Kariuki, and Mrs. Obonyo saw my potential at that early stage and gave me special attention. I was their mission.
Thanks to my siblings Esther, Dave, Samuel Chesky Onyango. and Elvis Omollo as well as my childhood friends from Korogocho, former schoolmates at Jamhuri High School & Moi University, the African community in the USA, and my American friends who always cheered me on my academic marathon. I am very grateful to all the staff and professors at Ohio University, especially those who guided me during the dissertation writing process, Prof. Steve Howard, Drs. Laeeq Khan, Thomas Alan, and Jatin Srivastava for this fantastic experience! I am now a double Ohio University alumnus!!!! I’m excited for what the future holds, and I wish all those graduating with me today the best of luck.![]()
